We learned many things that they are doing that could possibly be used aboard the TEXAS. Those FTV and TPWD members that took the tour were. Mr. Jerry Hopkins, Steve Bostick, Andrew Bostick, Bill and Sarah Richmond, Josephine, Nicole & Dennis Mitchell. |

"Road Trip” to the USS Kidd in Baton Rouge and the USS Orleck in Orange Texas June 7-8, 2003 Several volunteers and park staff went on a “road trip” to the USS Kidd in Baton Rouge this past weekend. The group spent several hours on Saturday and Sunday aboard the WWII destroyer and an equal amount of time in the maritime museum (Ed just loves the engine and boiler rooms). All were very impressed with the ship and museum. It is definitely a site worth visiting with your family. Situated along the Mississippi River, there is a hotel within walking distance of the museum and ship, a museum of natural science, the original state capital building, a casino, and much more. Although their website is under construction, bookmark their new Internet home at www.usskidd.com. On the way back to Texas on Sunday, eight of the travelers stopped in unannounced at the USS Orleck in Orange, Texas. A couple of volunteers working on restoring the ship allowed the group to roam the ship for a couple of hours and even gave some impromptu tours. The USS Orleck is also a destroyer and her last tour of duty was for the Turkish Navy until the early 90’s. You can read all about her history at www.ussorleck.org. Open to anyone interested in naval history and wanting to have a general good time, our next scheduled outing will be in October to the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi. It is our hope that more of you will join the road warriors on future trips. Check out the history of the “Lex” at www.usslexington.com. |
