If
you are interested in obtaining YOUR relatives Military Record you will
find some very useful information below.
I
have located this information via web site searching but I have not personally
gone through the process to obtain my relatives Military Records so I only offer
this as a possibility but not the only way to do so.
The Battleship Texas has some data
from the WWII era but nothing prior to that. As for personnel records they have
some Muster Logs showing the names of the crewmembers. However if you are trying
to find out more details about your family member I would recommend you request
a copy of their Military Records via the information below.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have your family members service record # or their Social Security #
then you can request their Military Records on-line at:
http://www.archives.gov/research_room/vetrecs/
If you wish to download the form you will need (SF-180) click here.

If you do not have YOUR relatives Service Record # or their Social Security # then try the following:
The following is off the web site for the National Archives:
Old Military and Civil Branch, National Archives,
700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington DC 20408
Telephone (202) 501-5385
Holds deck logs of individual ships through 1940. Officer personnel are often listed on the first page of each month's log for the 1880-1941 time period. A collection of monthly muster rolls listing enlisted personnel aboard individual ships from the 1880-1938 is bound in books. The Bureau of Ships records through 1940 and the Navy's Judge Advocate General investigative records, for the pre-World War II period, are also maintained in the Branch.
The National Archives has BB35 muster logs. The names are
listed in alphabetical order.
(They were made every quarter). You can e-mail an order to inquire@nara.gov
. In the past I have
sent directly to inquire@arch1.nara.gov
(the section that handles records prior to 1941).
There is a minimum cost of $10 and the data can be copied only onto microfilm
(your local library may have a microfilm reader).
Microfilm is about 50 cents a frame. An entire quarter will be about 30 pages.
Possibly a relative can get just the pages with the last names starting with the first letter.
