Started Feb. 2003, to be completed Oct 1, 2005
Currently when you are visiting the ship you can only go forward on the second deck to the ship's "Ward Room".
This is where the USS Texas silver set is and various other artifacts.
As you can see from the shaded areas of the drawing above we are working on a large area forward of the Ward Room. This project will cover the passageway and the forward most Wardroom Stateroom on the starboard (right) side of the ship and the Head (bathroom) in the bow of the ship.
The First Texas Volunteers have taken on this restoration assignment and estimate it will take just over one year to complete.
We have a tentative completion date of November 2005.

Volunteer Andrew Bostick removing the paint and rust. This is the time consuming part of our efforts. |
This air vent duct was very badly corroded. Volunteer David Glass is in the process of repairing the damage. |
This shows the duct repaired. It just needs to be painted now. Nice job Dave. |
This shows the Anchor Chain Tubes going from the main deck to the chain locker. |
We are sanding down ALL of the layers of paint. This shows one of the ventilation ducts and the Brass curtain rod for the bunks in the passageway. |
Much to our surprise.... below many layers of paint we found that a section of the Fire Main pipe is Brass. This will be cleaned up and the brass left exposed. Adds a great deal to the compartment. |
Two of our volunteer electrical restoration crew members, Roy and Jimmy hard at work. With a project such as this they will be very busy. Many thanks to my fellow volunteers. |
It's difficult to see this but etched into the metal ceiling beam is the name "TEXAS". It is up side down. |
This photo of the right hand (starboard) side of the Passageway looking forward in the ship. See diagram above. Note that most of the paint has been removed from the walls (bulkheads) but we have a long way to go. |

Passageway just forward of the Ward Room, shows the security cage we built to keep people from going below to the Half-Deck. |
When we restore an area of the ship we have to remove all the layers of paint. This will assure that the new paint will last a long time and remain looking good. This door is the Port door going to the Ward Room. |
This view is looking forward on the Starboard side of the passageway from the door to the Ward Room. |
One of our volunteers working in the officer's Head near the bow of the ship. |
Another volunteer, he is working in the officer's stateroom which, is located just aft of the Head. |
Volunteer Chris has put in a great deal of time on this project. He looks like the Mad Painter...haha! Great guy to work with. |
Located in the Officer's Head. This is where the urinals will be mounted after the painting is done. As you can see the primer is done....next coat of paint is "White".
|
Located in the passageway looking aft are going to be three bunks. According to a veterans letter we found in the archive "Ensigns" were assigned to these bunks. The blue tape above is covering the brass railing for the curtains. If you look at the drawing above find 38 and you will see where this is located. |
Located in the officer's Head looking AFT into the passageway. As you can see were still doing the red primer. |
